CURRENT AFFAIRS DIRECTOR

Wan Ding Yao

In a bid to help the other members make the right choices for future of the society and themselves, the current ExCo has collated profiles of the members running for ExCo positions, and they are as such:

President

Uma:

Your vote holds more importance than you think it does, it’s not just the vote that you will give me, it’s your trust and I promise to be trustworthy. By casting your vote for me, you are in this with me and we shall be a team. A team that works together to continue striving for excellence.  As President, my vision for the society will be to enhance the value of PSS and strengthen the bonds within.

Politics is the lifeblood of any society, and rumblings within the sociopolitical sphere should be understood by everyone. In that light, I hope to organize monthly school wide sessions that students and faculty could attend to understand key developments and its impact on our lives. I hope to open up opportunities for all to learn something and create fresh ideas for the society by deviating away from the usual MUN related sessions. Perhaps, even increase collaboration with other CCAs, JCs and external organizations.

My mission is also to create a lasting legacy for PSS members, past, present and future, by ensuring that our competitions, debates, dialogues, and presentations are documented and made available online for posterity. This is something I cannot do by myself, but hope to excite fellow members to engage and develop this medium, especially my fellow EXCO members.

I feel that my past leadership experiences as House Vice-Captain, Peer Support leader, MUN conference secretariat member and heading my secondary school’s MUN delegation during conferences, have instilled life-long skills  and values in me that have made me a better leader and friend. I believe that I can forge greater bonds within the society so that each session is memorable and the friendships made are ever-lasting.

So, make the right choice because the best is yet to be. Vote for me, Uma Sharma, as President of PSS.

Vice-President

Germaine:

I believe in servant leadership and I believe that everyone should be happy in PSS. But above all, I believe that a leader should serve and support everyone in PSS so that they have a truly fulfilling and happy experience that they can be proud of when they ultimately leave the society. Needless to say, I honestly want to be that very leader, along with the other candidates, who can be the one to support PSS as a whole; the seniors, the juniors, and the future ExCo that would be elected into office. Having been a Secretary/Treasurer for my previous CCA, I’ve seen how some led with passion and love, while others became leaders just so that they have a sense of superiority. I want to lead, but most of all, I want to be someone you can count on, talk to and someone who can walk with you every step of the way. I may not always be the best person for the job (both as VP and Current Affairs Director), seeing how I am contending with such capable people, but I promise you that I will do everything and anything that I can to serve our PSS. :)

Leanna:

I recognize the importance of leading among those I lead. Only when the whole Society is involved that PSS can achieve so much more and this can only be seen by a leader who leads among those under her care.

Care and not charge because that’s what being there to serve you means. It’s not a responsibility where you feel obliged. I will strive to continue and make much stronger what our seniors have started which is passion.

I swear to never leave anyone behind.

I swear to do my best and take on all my responsibilities, if in, with an open mind and serve with an open heart.

Michael:

Hello! My name is Michael Hu and I would like to run for Vice President for PSS this year.

Why am I running for Vice President? It’s because I have a vision for PSS, I believe if we were to learn from the mistakes the ExCo had made last year, and acted on it, PSS would in retrospect thrive as CCA. A write-up, I think, is honestly not enough to convince anyone that I am capable of the roles, as doubts would be left unanswered. So I would write this in a Question and Answer format.

“Michael always jokes around alot, can he maintain decorum when the time comes?”

Well, I do joke alot, because I believe that a very firm and one dimension group, would produce firm and one dimension results, jokes are jokes, but they do allow us to think in different perspective, and allow us to realize the flaws and misconceptions the public might have on certain resolutions and proposals in MUNS. For example, if a group pushes out a resolution that allows North Korea to merge back with the South with their economy merged, in return, the north would give up their nukes. I would joke that the north essentially fulfilled their roles by destroying the South’s economy and get paid for it. This is, so to speak a ” Constructive joke”. However, more than often, the jokes would just help brighten the mood after a long day at school. I believe that I have proved, in the recent SDTC and my group PSS project on the ICJ on the issue of JAPRA whaling, I am capable to be strict and formal if I need be, but I am human, and there would be exceptions. (I would try to limit the exceptions)

” Would Michael actually do any work? Or would he slack alot? ”

I would do all that is necessary in order to keep PSS running, and more, if possible, to improve PSS.

Do I slack? I would admit, if I am too tired to do anything, I would definitely appear less active during discussions of the following PSS session, but I would make sure everything rolls according to plan, completing all that I could, and all that I should (Rhythms man).

” What is Michael’s vision of PSS? ”

A smooth running machine, with sufficient practice for MUNS to participate actively and win awards! I do not want the members to overwork, but they would be given a certain amount of responsibility, be in reading up in advance, or be preparing a certain material for an upcoming activity, etc. I hope everyone would be doing their jobs, especially the ExCo, and I would do my best to assist the President and other members, if needed.

‘If I have a vision, why am I not running for CD, CAD, or even President?”

That is an excellent question! And I would answer that in horribly lazy way, in point form,

Why not CD? : As a content creator for a comic page, I know how hard ideas come by, and I don’t get good ones on a regular basis. So I doubt my ability to be sustainable as a CD in the long run.

Why not CAD? : I never been a CAD before, It would be a great opportunity to try, but that would be selfish, as I would not be taking into account to the wellbeing of the club, as if I fail to do my job efficiently, I would pull the whole society with me too, So I would not want to take that bet.

Why not president? : I do not think I can handle the stress. That’s it. I know my limits, and I know I can’t be a good president for an extended period of time, Like CD,

Then why vice president? : I believe that the VP is a supporting role for the president and the rest of the ExCo, Being an Ex-welfare head of my CCA in my secondary school, I think I can work well with almost everyone, regardless their personalities, I also believe I would be good practical and moral support for the ExCo team if I was to be elected.

Yep, that’s about it. Thanks for reading my write-up; it would be simply delightful if you were to vote for me. Have a great day and take care!

Secretary

Sairesh:

Hi, I want to be the secretary as I feel that I am very responsible and capable of managing administrative affairs and want to contribute to the society. Although I am not outgoing and seem unapproachable, I am actually quite friendly and helpful. I took up two leadership positions in my secondary school which were the Vice-Chairman/Secretary of my class and Company Administrative Sergeant in my CCA, NCC Land. As part of my role in my CCA,I was part of a team which was in charge of all administrative matters, including attendance(MC etc.),collection of payment/forms and organization of camps. I was personally in charge of all administrative matters during the CCA’s annual camp and played in a key role in ensuring that everything ran smoothly. My team was also in charge of CCA welfare and we put forth initiatives to gather feedback from the cadets about trainings and other CCA matters. This feedback was then relayed to my peers who were directly in charge of the cadets. I was also responsible for the taking down of minutes and learning points during post-training and post-camp reflections and these were subsequently stored in a database which was passed on to future leaders of the CCA. As Vice-Chairman/Secretary of my class for 2 consecutive years, I was mainly in charge of class cleanliness, the collection of forms/payment, attendance and assisting the Class Chairman in any initiatives that he puts forth. I also helped to maintain the class website and helped to relay any important things to my classmates. Upon graduation, I was awarded the Lasallian Leadership Award (Silver) and the Certificate of Service. I strongly believe that I will be able to contribute to PSS in a positive way as I feel that although I may be quite shy and quiet most of the time, I am very responsible and reliable person and am capable of being secretary.

Clara:

Hi! I’m Clara from 1T35. I only just joined PSS and might be unfamiliar to many of you but I’d like to be given the opportunity to be the secretary. From a position of leadership in the student council previously, you can be assured that I will be responsible and duty- orientated regarding tasks assigned to me, as a secretary rightfully should be. Apart from fulfilling the role of a secretary dutifully, I’d like to extend the warmth and welcoming spirit, despite joining later, that was extended to me to everyone else in the society – where everyone’s thoughts can be voiced without hesitation! Let’s make PSS a better society for all! Thank you :)

Siti:

By being in the 3rd Executive Committee, I wish to contribute to the society as much as I can with the skills that I have in my short term of office if I ever get into the ExCo. Being a small society, I feel that it is incredibly important to maximize everybody’s skills and I wish to contribute to the society. I do believe that I can make a good secretary due to my previous experiences of being an ExCo member in secondary school and that I have learnt my lessons from before. I feel that getting into the committee will not only make me contribute to the society with my skills of organization but it will make me a person with more responsibility. People may have this misconception that being a secretary is easy work as you handle administrative work only. But I feel that this post will give me the pressure to better my organization skills and also my communication skills between myself and the teachers.

Sean Liew:

I would like to vie for the Secretary Post as firstly I truly am passionate about the role and have the interests for the Society at heart.

Ever since I have joined our Society I am amazed at how efficient the way things were run, such as how constant reminders were sent out and the logistics provided for each session and competition so far. Thus, I would like to apply for the role of Secretary, in hopes that I am able to continue this tradition and ensuring that our Society runs smoothly, in order for every member to reap the best benefits out of what every session has to offer.

Although I do not have any leadership background, I feel that if this role is assigned to me, all the more I will treasure it and ensure that I live up to the societies expectations, as well as my own.

Lastly, I feel that as being an easy going guy with patience, I am able to communicate with my batchmates well, and hopefully this will continue to reflect with next year’s juniors. I believe that this greatly decreases the amount of unwanted strife and conflict in our Society, which may eventually lead to other problems such as loss of morale and less willing to cooperate.

I do hope you will consider my application and I look forward to helping this Society reach greater heights.

God Bless.

Aaron:

Hi PSS! I will be writing about the reason I want to be in the ExCo and some of my talents that will be required for the role. I am running for secretary, I believe that secretaries should be very on task and organized if not the welfare of you guys will all be affected. I feel that I am capable in doing so because it is evident because I’m treasure in church committee and I’m also in the Class Management Committee. I want to be in the ExCo because I want to be involved in the planning process to maximize my learning process. I believe that the next year of being in ExCo will be one of my most memorable times in CJC because it will be spent bringing joy to all of u :) Thank you.

Current Affairs Director

Alyssa:

Hi, I’m Alyssa Tjioe of 1T18, and today’s key word is

“Try.”

I’m going to try for Current Affairs Director, I’ll try to do my best for it and I promise that I’ll try my best to fulfill and exceed the expectations you have of a CAD.

I’ll try, and I’ll fail. But I’m always going to try harder, and better, so that I’ll get it right in the end.

I can’t give to the SOCIETY experience, or a broad scope of knowledge, but what I can offer is a passion for and willingness to learn, listen and lead. What do you want out of a session? I’ll find out, and do my best to make it happen.

I have hopes for greater collaboration amongst us, with other JCs and other CCAs. Let every single person here have a voice, an idea, a plan to carry out. Let us each have an opportunity to go all out, impress, and be impressed. I hope to work collaboratively with everyone to reach a higher standard of learning and cooperation such that every member feels confident enough to speak up, and speak out no matter the setting.

On my part, I was Head of Organization and Recreation in my ex-CCA (Red Cross) and as a Warrant Officer taught my Secondary 1 juniors Evacuation. It has given me some experience in the planning and execution of sessions and events, as well as bringing ideas across clearly as I had to make Evacuation make sense to my juniors, plan recreational activities and both internal and external events like inter-school enrichment and flag days. No doubt this new endeavor will be very different, but I can promise you:

I’ll try my best and hardest.

Won’t you?

Creative Director

Chang Ming:

Why do I want to be an ExCo:

Well when I first joined PSS, I was actually quite afraid yet excited at the same time. Excited because there are so many people in the society that have a passion for current affairs and politics alike, and afraid because I am still not that articulate in English. Hence I know the limit of my capabilities, but at the same time I wish to contribute to the society with my strengths, that’s why I want to run for the position of the Creative Director.

My capabilities:

Video productions (both filming + editing)

Art (Traditional: Pin pen/pencil/charcoal/calligraphy markers; Digital: Photoshop, Paint Tool SAI)

IT: definitely know the basics such as setting up a blog/ wordpress /facebook /twitter, and I am VERY ACTIVE on social media :P PP

Okay that should be all. Thank you!! :)

Sing Ying:

I am Lee Sing Ying from 1T01. I am running for the position of Creative Director. I do acknowledge that I may not be the most outstanding of the three candidates running for this position, but I do have the passion to do my part for the society. By allowing me to be the Creative Director, I can contribute valuable ideas to the society that can both help to better facilitate CCA sessions and to bring the society forward. Furthermore, since I am quite a computer addict, I pledge that I would update the CJC PSS website regularly to keep our fellow school mates and external organizations updated about our movements. My experience as the President of Chess Club in my secondary school has taught me how to lead the mass with my heart and not my head. Although winning MUNs and the various competitions maybe important, but I hope that with my presence in the ExCo, PSS would not be so results driven. Instead members would feel comfortable attending every session and leaving with some knowledge and a smile on their faces. I believe that “The purpose in life is to contribute in some way to making things better”-Robert F. Kennedy. I want to make the society better.

Thank you :D

Ding Yao:

I want to be in ExCo because I strongly believe I have the capability, capacity and competence to lead. I am outspoken and voice out my thoughts and ideas when the opportunity calls for it. Well-versed in current affairs, I am also able to generate effective and good pointers. Last but not least, PSS is not just a CCA which I have passion for. It is a CCA which I love.

I have been exposed to Information Technology since young. Ergo, I am equipped with essential computing skills such as but not limited to: Photoshop Lightroom & CS6, After Effects CS6, Dreamweaver, the standard Microsoft Office productivity suite as well as various web languages such as HTML and PHP. If I am elected, I will do my outmost best to revamp the current blog of PSS which is not only outdated but also poorly designed (not conforming to the standards of today’s Internet).

My plans for the CCA include the purchasing of a domain name (cjcpss.com) as well as web hosting packages for the CCA’s new website (MORE THAN JUST A BLOG). I will also create a digital calendar to organize PSS’s events, as well as create convenient methods for everyone to contribute to the content on the CCA’s new website. In order to make sure that the website stays relevant, I will personally ensure that its content is updated regularly.

Currently, the PSS blog is dormant and serves only as a news portal for events that the society attends. I believe that the new website to be launched should not stay dormant and must involve not only the society but the school. As such, when the society plans or attends MUNs, websites will be created in order to facilitate discussion at home during non-CCA hours. Also, when internal MUNs are carried out (such as the J2 MUN), the CCA website will be used as a platform to provide study guides as well as live updates on the progress of the MUN. CJC-ians are able to use the website to gain insights on PSS as a CCA as well as learn about the politics of the world today.

So what are you waiting for?

For techies: The new CCA website will be created using Joomla! or WordPress. These are the top two content management systems (CMS) out in the Internet today. Should the need be necessary, I will also develop a PSS Android application to facilitate access to the website’s content.

Sabna:

Remembering that good leadership is the key in connecting the dots and finally achieving the end point of success as a team; as the creative leader of the society I hope to add vibrancy to the society in being able to unite each of us as one. This is only possible if you trust me and make this happen by giving me the opportunity to lead all of u. I want to be a leader amongst you, with nothing but compassionate for my members. I hope to be approachable and help you guys when you need me. Leaders are not supposed to be driven by power but instead passion alone. Having gained the invaluable experience of being a prefect and the squad commander of my CCA in enduring challenges and overcoming them, I believe that I have the passion to guide you in being the catalyst that creates the positive change in the society as part of the puzzle piece in the 3rd executive committee that makes us a whole. Therefore make the right choice in supporting for me in being the leader whom you would trust and work with. So, do vote for me! Thank you all

CJCPSS to participate in NTUMUN 2013!

NTUMUN 2013

Open House CJC 2013

Recently, CJCPSS participated in CJC Open House 2013 as a part of the CJC family and experience. Here is a reflection from our fellow society member, Marcus Lim, on the event.
Participating in the open house was a rather strange experience for me in all honesty. I took care of the booth for a brief period of time and during that time, somewhat struggled to ‘define’ what the political science society was in all its entirety. Apart from promoting the society however, I actually had various chances to explain to a few parents regarding CJC as a whole. For example, I had the pleasure of explaining the Catholic environment in the college. It was an enriching experience and pleasurable one, being able to assist the parents clear up some confusing and concerns that they had regarding not only the college but the system as a whole. Although I did feel that having the PSS booth in such a remote location made sure that the crowd would more than likely not visit the booth at all.

UNASMUN 2012 Reflections

The 2nd United Nations Association of Singapore Model United Nations (UNASMUN) Preparatory Conference was held in Catholic Junior College (CJC) from 5 to 8 December 2012. This conference is organized by the United Nations Association of Singapore in conjunction with CJC to allow those who had no prior experience in the Model United Nations (MUN) environment to prepare themselves to be able to familiarize themselves to the standard procedures and protocols of a MUN. This is done through a standardized programme that guides them through the debate procedures, document preparation, knowledge about the United Nations et cetera. Thus, through this experience, students or even educators can participate in an assortment of local MUN conferences, expand the MUN programme internally within the school, and comprehend about the United Nations (UN) and the world at large. This particular MUN was an improvement to the inaugural UNASMUN that is also co-host and co-organized by CJC Political Science Society (CJCPSS) as it further targets neighbouring schools all around Singapore that is less exposed to MUNs and thereby providing new opportunities for students and educators to exchange ideas and learn from one another.

Besides students and educators, the facilitators like the chairs and volunteers also benefited from this experience, even if some of the volunteers are without prior experience in an event of such nature. Volunteers in the conference would mostly help in passing notes, logistics or administration. Being a volunteer can be quite rewarding because the event provides you with an image of how a MUN is usually conducted. What this means is that you get an idea of what to expect in a MUN conference and understand the intricacies of the MUN that makes it such a unique experience, especially to those who has not a complete idea about MUN. Even for those who had prior experience in participating in a MUN as a delegate, being a volunteer or chair provides you in a rather different perspective of MUN.

“From my experience, I can say that I can understand and relate more to the challenges in conducting the conference. And it also gives you a clearer image of how MUN functions, in terms of the procedures and protocols. This will allow you to be more aware of them and be more meticulous in the way you speak. Therefore, volunteering in such preparatory conference will be a very rewarding, especially for those who had no idea but interested in what MUN is.”

-Tan Jia Hui, member of PSS and volunteer for UNASMUN 2012

“Being the only CJC chair this year, I feel an immense sense of achievement to see a council being engaged in productive debate over the issues. Moreover, as this is my first time as a chair, I also learned a lot by seeing and preparing MUN from a different perspective and that at the end of the day, it is a very enriching experience to be able to be part of a MUN.”

-Kelvin Koh Wei Jie, Creative Director of PSS, co-chair of Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for UNASMUN 2012

Also, UNASMUN 2012 have strengthened the bonds between both members and teachers within PSS as the challenges and success of UNASMUN were solved and credited respectively to every single members that contribute their precious time in the holidays to help plan and organize the event from scratch. Also, we would like to thank the volunteers and other external chairs for their contribution to make UNASMUN 2012 such a success. Finally, CJCPSS is gratefully thankful for UNAS and especially the Secretary-General of UNASMUN 2012, Mr Kwan Jin Yao, for giving us the chance to co-organize such a huge event and thereby reinforcing CJCPSS’ potentials even though we are a new society in CJC.

Post MUNOFS V Reflections!

The Model United Nations Overseas Family School, or MUNOFS for short, was indeed a fruitful experience. MUNOFS- one of the avenues for students with no prior MUN experiences to participate in a non-competitive MUN. The 2012 MUNOFS,similar to the conventional MUNs held in Singapore, where programmes included: the opening ceremony, council and plenary sessions, as well as closing ceremony. Over the span of two days, we drew several learning points essentially from four aspects: organization, level of engagement, quality and flow of the conference.

Firstly, the organization of the conference. On the first day of the conference, it seemed that the venue for the opening ceremony was not ready, hence causing a delay . From this, learnt that it is imperative for all preparations to be made (at least a day) in advance. This is to ensure a smooth-sailing conference just as the conference begins. Moreover, it was apparent that there were insufficient chairs. It is key to always have extra logistics rather than a lack of it, to ensure that the welfare of delegates is taken care of.

Secondly, the level of engagement. As the society mentioned, the performances put up on the opening and closing ceremonies were engaging. This is something, which we can adopt- to ensure the conference is as interesting as possible. However, the impact of the performances during the ceremonies could have been enhanced, had they been relevant to the conference’s theme. Also, comments were made that the keynote speaker whom addressed the delegates mentioned some key points for the delegates to ponder upon but was, unfortunately, not engaging enough. Leading to a handful of delegates and a lack of attention to the plenary sessions, which encompassed several issues that could have aided the delegates in broadening their perspectives. Thus, it is important for the speaker to not only be knowledgeable, but also engaging and warm.

Thirdly, the quality of the conference. As many inexperienced students attended this conference, the discussions and debates were not highly elevated. Issues discussed were only delved into shallowly, and the breadth of topics was similarly narrow. This might have been on the part of student officers who failed to emphasize on the main ideas of the council sessions. No pushes by the chairpersons were made, and no position paper was needed. Hence, it could be the lack of follow-ups towards the event and in the event itself that caused the low quality of debates. From this, we can see the importance of enforcing the understanding of one’s country stand, as well as the issue. And to this, we now know that the chairperson of the council session plays a vital role in this aspect. One commendable point was the time given for delegates to interact. This allowed students to network and hence befriend delegates from different countries.

Fourthly, it is the flow of the conference. It was noted that there on several occasions, break times were excessively long. The momentum and flow of the conference was therefore disrupted. Hence, it is important that the schedule of programmes would result in a series of activities that builds up the momentum of the conference.

Overall, be it the pleasant or not too pleasant happenings, MUNOFS was surely one that will be an important conference for us to watch and learn. (Pics are below!:) )
